How do I apply for Section
8?
Start with your Housing Specialist. Your Housing Specialist will do an assessment to
determine whether you are eligible and suitable for the Section 8 program.
How long does it take to know if I qualify?
If you meet the requirements
(HIV-positive, documented and legally residing in the United States, and income
requirements) then you qualify. Your Housing Specialist can tell you during the course of
your meeting if you meet the requirements or not.
What is the standard waiting period for someone who has applied for Section
8?
There is no time frame. It is based on the number of certificates
allotted to the referral agency by the Housing Authority and on the number of people
applying for certificates.
What is the difference between applying with the City or the County?
The
jurisdiction.
Is there a difference in how I apply for City or County? Is one quicker?
All the requirements and procedures are almost the same for both, and are determined
by HUD. There is no way to determine which would be quicker. It fluctuates depending
on the number of certificates allotted and the number of people applying for
them.
Once I receive Section 8, how long do I have to find an apartment?
A
County certificate/voucher will expire in 60 days, and a City certificate/voucher
will expire in 90 days. If you have difficulty finding housing, you must discuss it
with a Section 8 advisor at the Housing Authority.
How can I find an apartment that accepts Section 8?
Your Housing
Authority can provide you with listings of Section 8 rental units. These listings
are updated weekly. You can also obtain listings through your Housing Specialist.
